Literature Text

[1955]
he drapes
silk-strung pearls
over sepia
postcards of a gossamer spring.

[1981]
Sprechstimme;
he wakes
to the sound of his bedroom wall
singing
about blood-
pressure and autumn
slumber.
these two short poems are inspired from the recordings of the goldberg variations by glenn gould, recorded respectively in 1955 and 1981.

1981 has haunted me ever since I first heard it. glenn plays like he knew of the death that loomed over him in the next october.

happy 81st birthday, maestro.

Nothing on heaven or earth lies above the recordings Glenn Gould made of the works of Bach. My god how he would have loved modern music, that beautiful eccentric man. Bach no doubt smiles when chatting with Gould about the interpretation of his music, not in heaven or hell but that interdenominational hole in space time where all musicians come from, dream in, and to which they must one day return.
